Federalist Publisher and Fox News Contributor Ben Domenech railed the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) Wednesday as a “feeble aged remnant of a time when there were just three channels on TV.”
“It’s long past time we got rid of format restrictions and anchors with obvious bias,” Domenech said. “I would rather watch a debate moderated by Tucker Carlson and Rachel Maddow or Laura Ingraham and Van Jones than submit to the likes of the aggressively hackish John Harwood.”
Republican Party Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel released a statement Wednesday with potential to extinguish the debate commission for good after last fall’s partisan conduct manipulating rules in favor of Joe Biden. Absent significant changes to the debate commission’s rules for 2024, McDaniel pledged the GOP would advise presidential candidates to refrain from participation in any event sponsored by the commission.
“The Republican Party needs assurances that the CPD will make meaningful reforms to the debate process by working with the stakeholders to restore the faith and legitimacy it has lost,” McDaniel wrote. “If not, as RNC Chairman, I will have no choice but to advise future Republican candidates against participating in CPD-hosted debates.”
Domenech said a more meaningful format in the modern media environment, where videos on YouTube surpass the viewership of shows on cable television, would be more appropriate moving forward.
“People are tired of this format, they’re ready to move on to something for the age of YouTube,” Domenech said, reiterating his call for podcast host Joe Rogan to moderate a debate in the future.
