Tuesday was May 4th, a special day in the Star Wars galaxy. It’s the day that everyone wishes people “May the 4th be with you” and has lots of fun celebrating the series in some way.
Here’s a little bit of the fun.
But the folks at the Alabama Public Health Twitter tried to use the day to push mask-wearing. It did not go well.
Now, what this revealed is that the person behind the Twitter account hasn’t watched Star Wars or has missed a few critical points.
First of all, making your mask hero a genocidal killer probably isn’t the best idea. He killed kids, used the force to choke people, blew up a planet, and chopped off his son’s hand – and those are just some of the many evils he perpetrated. But hey, I guess he did manage to end the climate crisis on Alderaan, that planet he blew up.
Alabama Public Health made it pretty clear that they don’t know Vader’s history and don’t know about the redemption scene with Darth Vader and his son, Luke Skywalker.
Although the mask was necessary for Vader’s life because of his severe injuries, Vader regarded the mask as a prison. All he wanted to do, as he died, was to get the mask off, so he could look on the face of his son without the mask and regain his humanity. I’m just guessing that’s not the message that the Public Health folks are meaning to send?
Just as a matter of fact, Alabama no longer has a mask mandate, though it was just lifted in Montgomery County offices that still had it – so I’m not sure what the Public Health folks were going for with the tweet.
The Public Health account got ratioed into next week with the responses, both for being completely wrong about everything Star Wars and for misunderstanding Darth Vader big time.
Not sure what they expected, but I’m guessing this wasn’t it. Or, is it that there is no such thing as bad publicity?
