Let the show begin! After Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) received criticism from both Republicans and Democrats for once again spewing ridiculous anti-American sentiment, members of her team put on the big red shoes, applied the white and red makeup, and cartwheeled into action to defend their beloved comrade.
First up, we have Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO), who did something totally unexpected: She implied that those criticizing Omar were guilty of – wait for it – racism and Islamophobia. She tweeted:
“Stop attacking @IlhanMN. Stop attacking us. I’m not surprised when Republicans attack Black women for standing up for human rights. But when it’s Democrats, it’s especially hurtful. We’re your colleagues. Talk to us directly. Enough with the anti-Blackness and Islamophobia.”
Next, we have Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who like Omar, is also known for making anti-Semitic remarks. She lashed out at her Democratic colleagues for “policing” Omar.
“I am tired of colleagues (both D+R) demonizing @IlhanMN. Their obsession with policing her is sick. She has the courage to call out human rights abuses no matter who is responsible. That’s better than colleagues who look away if it serves their politics,” she wrote on Twitter.
She continued, claiming that “freedom of speech doesn’t exist for Muslim women in Congress.” Oh, and she also pulled the race and Islamic card.
But as we all know, a clownish Squad pile-on wouldn’t be complete without Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who also clutched her pearls as she chimed in on the whole kerfuffle, stating that she is “pretty sick & tired of the constant vilification, intentional mischaracterization, and public targeting of @IlhanMN” that was coming from her fellow Democrats who manage not to say stupid crap on Twitter.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) also gave her two cents, claiming that those castigating Omar were taking her words “out of context.”
But it wasn’t just members of the Squad who put on a Barnum & Bailey-like performance on social media. The Congressional Progressive Caucus issued a statement that read:
We cannot ignore a right-wing media echo chamber that has deliberately and routinely attacked a Black, Muslim woman in Congress, distorting her views and intentions, and resulting in threats against Rep. Omar and her staff. We urge our colleagues not to abet or amplify such divisive and bad-faith tactics. Members of the Democratic Caucus owe it to each other to pause, reflect, and engage directly with each other and misunderstandings arise, and stand together against cynical attempts to divide our caucus.
Rep. Omar came under fire earlier this week when she posted a video of a conversation between Secretary of State Antony Blinken and herself on Israel and the rest of the Middle East. In the tweet, she wrote: “We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S. Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban.”
Predictably, Republicans and Democrats slammed her for the comment, which prompted the outpouring of support and race-baiting from her comrades. These folks can cry “racism” and “Islamophobia” all they want, but when even Democrats are criticizing her, it’s clear the Clown Squad™ is not going to win this battle.
